Former Browns RB Greg Pruitt Addresses Trent Richardson and Jim Brown’s Criticism:

By: Brett Crow

Appearing this past Saturday night on The Sports Fix, Greg Pruitt was asked how he felt about the criticism that Jim Brown gave about Trent Richardson. Jim Brown had called the former Alabama running back and new Cleveland Brown “ordinary.”

“Jim is a guy that you get maybe four different Jim Browns, depending on when you talk to him,” said Pruitt. “If you know him, sometimes you have to take that with a grain of salt.”

When asked of his own personal feelings of the third pick of this year’s NFL draft, Greg Pruitt offered high praise: “I think he’s a great player. He’s a hard worker. He’s one of those guys who finish at the end of the play and he can be a third down back, which is essential.”

Being a father of a three year old and also a five year old daughter, Trent is a leader off the field certainly, but Pruitt believes that will translate in the locker room: “He’s not only a great athlete and a great running back, he’s a great leader too.”

The former Browns running back also addressed the challenges of raising children and how that helped mold the kind of player that Trent Richardson is and will be: “I think he realizes how lucky and fortunate he is to have this opportunity...And despite the situations that he has, he is now in a position to do more. And it just helps him, because when you have challenges in your life and you overcome them, you realize how hard it can be. Hard work is no stranger to him.”

Trent Richardson went into the 2011 season as Alabama’s starting running back after having spent the previous two years behind Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram. In 2011, Richardson accumulated 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns, also managing an impressive 5.9 yard per rushing attempt average.

Greg Pruitt, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, was a running back in the NFL from 1973 to 1984, drafted by the Cleveland Browns and playing for them until the 1982 season when he joined the Oakland Raiders. Pruitt tallied up 5,496 rushing yards during his time with Cleveland, and also became a Pro Bowl player in four of his years in Cleveland.

Mock NFL Draft: Picks 1 -10

 By: Brett Crow

With the 1st pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select Quarterback Andrew Luck. Okay, let’s face it: This has been known since the end of the college football season. Luck has been the consensus number one almost since the last season started. And since having gotten rid of Peyton Manning, the Colts are badly in need of a quarterback.

But it’s possible: That nothing else happens. Luck was the Colt’s pick from day one, and the story broke last week that the Colts were 100% on taking him.

With the 2nd pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select Quarterback Robert Griffin III. The Redskins didn’t trade up to grab anyone else. If the draft order had stayed the way it was, then Griffin would have gone at #4 to the Browns. Anyone who wanted him had to trade ahead of the Browns, so that’s what they did.

But it’s possible: That there is no other possibility. While I can easily say that Kalil could be picked to shore up an anemic offensive line, or Claiborne to add to a secondary that lost LaRon Landry and O.J. Atogwe and only has decent starters at the corner position, it’s just not believable they don’t take Robert Griffin at this spot.

With the 3rd pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Offensive Tackle Matt Kalil. I know there’s a lot of talk lately about the Vikings grabbing Claiborne, but I believe that to be more of a smokescreen than anything. Bryant McKinnie was cut by the Vikings, and Kalil provides an anchor on the line for years to come. He provides the stability on the line that the inexperienced Christian Ponder needs to perform well in Minnesota.

But it’s possible: The Vikings take Claiborne. The cornerback situation is desperate in Minnesota, with a 35 year old Antoine Winfield leading a group of lackluster cornerbacks. In a division where you face Matthew Stafford/Calvin Johnson and Aaron Rogers/Any Packer WR two times a year, you need to be able to defend the pass.

With the 4th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Wide Receiver Justin Blackmon. Honestly, I’m not even a fan of this pick, but it’s what I see happening. Assuming, Luck, Griffin, and Kalil are all off of the board at this point, this is what the Browns are picking. While the right side of the line is a problem, it’s serviceable for now. And the Browns have shown a complete lack of faith in McCoy this offseason, but they’re apparently okay with him for this season. This leaves us with Justin Blackmon. The current core of wideouts has some promise with Greg Little, but there isn’t much else. And if they really want to give McCoy a shot at having a decent season, I think you have to pick up Blackmon.

But it’s possible: The Browns take Morris Claiborne. While I believe they shore up the offense, it’s possible they try to perfect the defense. Joe Haden is a talented cornerback, but he is in no way what everyone thinks he is. I groaned every time I heard the commentators of the Browns game last season talking about how Joe Haden was one of the most promising and best young cornerbacks. The fact is, Claiborne would be immediate help to an overhyped secondary. It would be nice if teams didn’t pass on us because we had a good secondary, not because they beat us on the ground and didn’t need to pass.

With the 5th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Cornerback Morris Claiborne. Don’t be surprised if you see Tampa Bay pick up secondary help here. Tampa Bay’s Aqib Talib is going on trial in late June for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. They already picked up Eric Wright in free agency, but Claiborne would add so much to Tampa Bay’s team.

But it’s possible: That they pick up Trent Richardson. As little faith as the team has in Aqib Talib right now, they probably have as much for current running back LaGarrette Blount. The organization isn’t too high on Blount, especially since he seems to be fumbling prone and a personality issue. Trent Richardson would provide a little more stability to the position, and if all works out, the Buccaneers could have a very effective two running back system that seems to be prevalent in the NFL these days.

With the 6th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Defensive Tackle Fletcher Cox. Assuming that Blackmon is gone at this point, the Rams are stuck picking up Fletcher Cox. It’s not a bad pickup, but it’s not the pick they want. Fisher will work to shore up both sides of the line, as was his strategy in Tennessee.

But it’s possible: That the Rams pick up Melvin Ingram. The Rams are in desperate need of help at the linebacker position, particularly the outside. The Rams had the 31st ranked rushing defense and changing that starts at the defensive line and the linebackers.

With the 7th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Defensive End Quinton Coples. The Jaguars have gotten a lot better at this position with Jeremy Mincey looking like a solid starter. However, that’s unfortunately essentially what the line has going for it. Fellow lineman Aaron Kampman I feel is on the decline of his career and I can’t see him being a fixture on the Jacksonville line much longer. The thing is though, the Jaguars are dead set on NOT drafting here. They want to trade out for a team that wants Tannehill.

But it’s possible: That the Jaguars pick up Michael Brockers. Or Whitney Mercilus. Fact is, the Jaguars need talent on the defensive line and they can pick that up towards the middle or end of the first day. They are in a semi-valuable spot at having Miami behind them, and are desperately trying to push that Miami will take Tannehill.

With the 8th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is coming from only two seasons as a quarterback of the Aggies to the pros. And The Dolphins couldn’t be a better fit for him. Coach of the Aggies, Mike Sherman was hired to run the offense in Miami. Tannehill will be running the exact same offense he was in college. It’s hard to see them not taking Tannehill here.

But it’s possible: They take a wideout like Michael Floyd. The Dolphins are also in desperate need of help on the defensive side of the ball. So while they can take that kind of help at this position, it just doesn’t seem likely. If Tannehill is still there, they will take him.

With the 9th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select Defensive Tackle Dontari Poe. The Panthers have a terrible lack of effective talent on the defensive line. There was reported interest in Memphis’ Dontari Poe, and with Coples off the board at this point, this move makes sense.

But it’s possible: The Panthers have a need at wide receiver and cornerback too. They can take a look to their secondary and pick up Stephen Gilmore. Gilmore is first round talent, and could go as early as the Jaguars if they stay at 7. The Panthers could also use help at wideout, but I see that as more of a day three acquisition for them.

With the 10th pick, in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select Offensive Tackle Riley Reiff. The Bills have lost Demetrius Bell. And the blindside needs to be protected, so who better than Riley Reiff? The offensive line needs to be addressed here, as this is their most pressing need.

But it’s possible: The Bills have a lot of interest in Luke Kuechly. Bills GM said that Kuechly could play all three linebacker positions for them. Unfortunately, Kuechly is first round talent, and linebacker isn’t the most pressing need on the team, so they’ll most likely miss on adding Kuechly.

The Backup Quarterback Who Never Was: The Tim Tebow Edition

In towns like Cleveland, the backup quarterback has always been one of the most popular players. At least more popular than the starting quarterback. Perhaps the rare exception is this past year. Skilled as Seneca Wallace is, he hasn’t exactly endeared himself to the fanbase.

Frankly, neither has the front office as of late, especially in regards to Holmgren’s reaction to the Robert Griffin trade.

But one quarterback who no one expected to available was Tim Tebow. After Peyton Manning signed with the Broncos, Tebow suddenly became available. Realistically, he was a quarterback with more starting experience than the now-signed Matt Flynn. I’ll even admit that Tebow helped lead the Broncos to the playoffs (let’s be clear here though, the defense was the majority factor in that equation).

He was a wild success in Denver, and the crowd had him backed up from the beginning. So why did he come so cheap?

Because Tebow is a disease in the locker room, the stands, and in the media. Tim is a great guy and has probably spent more time helping people than most people even think about doing that. That has nothing to do with the fact he will ruin nearly every football franchise he is a part of.

Tebow will always have the unwavering support of the fanbase. Especially after his season in Denver, “Tebowmania” will be impossible to avoid wherever he goes. The fans clamored for him to start in Denver and they got it despite the fact that Tebow was the “fourth-best quarterback in training camp” that year. That worked when the front office had no faith in him and was just trying to ride his contract out.

In New York, where the media is as sensationalized as it gets, there will be Tebow stories popping up every day. As soon as Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez hits a losing streak or the playoff hopes look dashed, the fans in the stands will start the “Teeeebow. Teeeeebow,” chant.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has only made the situation worse by saying Tebow will the “backup quarterback” and used in “wildcat formations.” You already signed Sanchez’s ticket out of town by trading for Tebow, but by admitting you’re going to put him on the field, you’re paving the way for Tebow to become starting quarterback.

Some of you may ask, just what’s wrong with that though? Why can’t Tebow be a starting quarterback? The fact is, Tebow is inconsistent and inaccurate as a quarterback. Being a gimmick is the only option he has in the NFL. Brad Smith and Pat White are two examples of gimmick quarterbacks who didn’t pan out. They were never good enough as quarterbacks, just as Tim Tebow isn’t.

The difference is Tim Tebow will always the support and people clamoring for him to be a starting quarterback despite his lack of skill at the position. Wherever he goes, he will be a sickness in the locker room. He will undermine the quarterback when the quarterback fails, only because of the simple fact that Tebow is in the locker room. Tebow will undermine the coach when the coach doesn’t put him in. And even worse, if the coach does put him in and Tebow fails, the coach looks even worse.

Even in St. Louis, Tebow would have eventually cost Sam Bradford his job.

Really, New York is the worst place for him to be. Jacksonville would have been better for Tebow, as there is no quarterback cemented into the role of starter. There is no fanbase that’s really excited about the Jaguars. It would have energized the fanbase beyond belief.

But know this now: The Tebow experiment in New York is destined to fail and will be just another sideshow to the circus like atmosphere of the Jet’s locker room.

XMas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa all in one for you CLEVELAND BROWNS FANS!!!

By: Jerry "J-Rocc" Mires

Cleveland Browns fans everywhere, if you haven't yet done so, you really should be busy right now firing off cards and letters in thanks to one Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins. Thanks to his organization, Browns fans everywhere wont find themselves even MORE miserable for the next 5-7 years... and in no thanks at all to 95% of the local media here in Cleveland.

Usually, I refrain from referencing other broadcasters or stations, unless its in a positive way (such as bringing to the forefront a great book, or column written by a local author/columnist). However, the majority of the Cleveland sports media should be ashamed of themselves for the way they fawned all over RG3, and attempted to steamroll Browns fans and followers everywhere into lemming-like agreement with their chosen target of todays' affection (not to mention tomorrows regret!).

The FM station in town should have just renamed themselves RG.3(s) BIG FAN, as I mean it, goofs on all day parts of that station (minus a select few) COULDN'T THROW THEMSELVES AT THE RG3 ALTAR FAST ENOUGH!

I heard host after host around town (and read blog after blog, and tweet after tweet, blah blah blah) rail against the Browns if they had any notion of taking anyone not named RG3, and some even after the Skins-Rams trade, blasting the Browns for not trumping Washington to get the almighty RG3...

They were willing to trade any and all that it took to get what some of the local "media" claimed as the once in a lifetime talent that is RG3.. He is NOT ONCE IN ANY LIFETIME first off, he is a good college quarterback who took center stage after the real QB jewel of the draft not named Andrew Luck (Read that: Matt Barkley) decided not to join in on the fun...

He is also a good quarterback who lived in an offense unlike most of the NFL and has never taken snaps behind center, and the list of all world college QBs who threw for 1 million college yards, but who didn't translate to the NFL is long enough that you don't risk your draft for the next 3 years, and smart teams let other teams make that move...

[That's what most teams allow us to do in the draft every year, Cleveland takes Mel Kipers' picks who flop, while Pittsburgh takes the great players ESPN doesn't mention at all late in the 1st rd who always become All-Pro talents!]

They hung up on any caller who didn't want him, said anyone who didn't agree with them knew nothing about football, proceeded to make themselves sound like newbie fan boys with the loudest microphone, as if the more often and the louder they say it, the more true it becomes...

As I said on the show over and over the last month, however good RG3 pans out to be next year and beyond in the NFL... that is not how good he would have been if his path went through Cleveland. This team is in no position to make that move, and by the sheer luck that someone out there dumber than people wanted us to be made the Rams a "Herschel Walker" deal, we are spared finding this out first hand!

The Browns are now spared (for once) making the chowder head moves of the draft, and can focus on using the entire spectrum of our draft picks/options on filling the multiple holes remaining on our team.

We can now add starters on the offensive and defensive lines, bring in some more pieces on defense (perhaps Clairborne from MSU at 4, if Kalil goes at 3? Or how about Melvin Ingram if he falls to us at 22? Mike Adams and/or Devier Posey in Rds 2 or 3?), grab a WR prospect to pair along with a free agent WR or 2... With perhaps as many as 10 picks once the compensatory picks are dished out, the Browns have a chance to add youth, depth and talent.. NOT TO MENTION AT LEAST 3-5 STARTERS to a young team, and really kick start this rebuild right in the ass!

If the Browns get RG3... none of these options are on the table, nor the 1st round draft pick for the next 3 seasons...

Let that sink in...

If you think things are bad now, imagine what happens if everybody touting RG3 just happened to be wrong about our 2012 draft, you know, because its not like that has ever happened to us here in Cleveland before right? We've never been wrong in the top 5 of the draft, have we?

We have? Oh, well in that case...

This week Cleveland, don't fret, and don't moan about RG3.. Trust me, in the immortal words of Rick James and Dave Chappelle: "It's a celebration Cleveland, Enjoy yourselves!" (Wish I had more hands, so I can give Dan Snyder 4 thumps up!!!)

Browns Shurmur Trying To Change Luck At Combine

Written By Larry M. Glicken "LG"

Pat Shurmur held one of his famous press conferences at the NFL combine on Thursday, you know one where he really doesn't say much but still talks a lot.  Shurmur said the Browns could talk trading up to chase Robert Griffin III and he is even going to talk to Andrew Luck. Tom Heckert wasn't in Indy, he is back in Cleveland Ill. Lets hope the Browns do something worth while in this years draft, many think Cleveland needs a quarterback.

This years we are going to see Luck and Griffin in the draft. Indianapolis may pull a rabbit out of their hat and not take Luck who knows what Jim Irsay is thinking or if he is even capable of thinking with all the Peyton Manning drama on his mind.

Shurmur went on to say the Browns could trade up draft picks, and talking to Luck surprises me a bit. Does Shurmur really think the Browns can get into a position to draft at number one? Does he think the Colts would give it up? Who knows how Pat Shurmur thinks? I think the Browns should be focused on play-makers. The Browns front office guys are in Indianapolis to see guys like Robert Griffin III and Griffin already said he isn't going to throw at the combine. Why the heck not? It is easy, Griffin said he doesn't trust the receivers there.

Are you kidding me, Griffin should throw the ball and if those guys drop it he would be getting a preview of playing in Cleveland. What is RGIII going to do if the Browns take him and he doesn't have any play makers to throw to? Maybe RGIII can live through one season in the NFL without throwing the football, can you imagine that? Then the Browns can go into the 2013 draft and get him some play makers.

If RGIII doesn't trust the receivers at the combine he is going to be on for a rude awakening once he arrives in Cleveland, if he does come to Cleveland that is. I mean come on, we had a guy drop six passes in one football game last season for the Browns. The NFL should keep that stat, how many drops receivers have. If The Browns just draft a guy like Griffin and don't add any play makers to the teams roster, we could see the Cleveland Browns ruin their 11th quarterback since coming back into the NFL in 1999.....

Plenty Of Off Season Chatter About The Peyton's Manning & Hillis

Written By Larry M. Glicken "LG"

The talk of the off season about the fate of the Peyton's has kept the presses busy this year. Whether it be Peyton Hillis from the Cleveland Browns or Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts there have been rumors galore.  In Manning's case the rumors have him going to almost every team in the NFL. In the case of Hillis there is lots of concern about him re-signing with the Cleveland Browns.

The only certainty this far into the off season is if your name is Peyton and you play in the National football league there is lots of concern as too where you're going to be playing this season. For the Browns fans re--signing Hillis is a top priority. In the case of Manning I'm sure the fans in Indy want him to return to the Colts. Jim Irsay has certainly put this on his back burner. There were suppose to be talks following the super bowl, how Irsay has put this off this far is anyone's guess.

For the Cleveland Browns, they have made the case they want to re-sign Hillis. The sticking point could very well be Hillis's agent thinking Hillis is worth much more than the Browns are willing to pay. There were rumors floating this past weekend saying the Browns and Hillis already had a verbal contract agreement. We still haven't had any confirmation of those yet.

One thing that is certain is the fact Peyton Hillis will be playing football somewhere. As far as Manning goes, who knows? Peyton Manning may be better off going into retirement. Hey there are only two guys in the Monday Night Football Booth, maybe they kept a spot open for the 4 time NFL MVP.
